Funeral Directors from across Michigan will convene in Mount Pleasant at Soaring Eagle Casino & Resort on May 11-13, 2026, for the Michigan Funeral Directors Association’s Annual Convention. 

Attendees may receive up to 8 CE Credits by attending the 2-days of convention. Check out the information below for more event details.

MARTHA THAYER is a presenter, trainer, and online curriculum designer whose work is grounded in longstanding professional practice. She is the founder of Mortuary Training, where she and her team develop modern, practice-focused learning programs for funeral service professionals and organizations nationwide. 
Martha received Emeritus status from Arapahoe Community College in Littleton, Colorado, after teaching and serving as Chair of the Mortuary Science Department for over 25 years. In 1999, she pioneered the first fully accredited online mortuary science curriculum in the United States, establishing her as an early leader in distance education for funeral service professionals.

DUANE HILLS began his 44-year career following his graduation from Simmons School of Mortuary Science in 1978. A lifelong lover of American History, Duane considers it fate he would find himself named as President of Joseph Gawler’s Sons Funeral Home in Washington, DC – the funeral home of the Presidents, and has served in this role for a decade.

In his first book, “One Block West of The White House,” Duane merges his love of American History and his passion for funeral service by way of immersive story telling beginning in 1850 in Washington City, as it was known in that era.

Cole Home for Funerals as a senior embalmer.  Nathan is also an Adjunct Professor at Wayne State University in Chemistry in the Department of Mortuary Science.

Attendees with mortuary science licensees can earn 8 CE credits if they attend both days of the Convention. During the online convention registration process, attendees will be asked to verify their license # or enter it.  This is an important step in connecting your credits to your license.

Below is information the State of Michigan sent out to MI licensees.

Beginning October 31, 2025, continuing education (CE) will be required for all Michigan mortuary science licensees, as outlined in MCL 339.1806b.

Key Requirements:

  • Annual CE Requirement: Each licensee must complete at least 4 hours of eligible CE courses per year.
  • Subject-Specific Hours: Not less than 2 of the 4 hours of the courses required each year shall involve 1 or more of the following subject areas:
    • Embalming and restorative art
    • Funeral ethics and best practices
    • Grief counseling
    • Occupational health and safety
    • Communicable diseases and sterilization
    • Michigan funeral statutes and rules
    • Prepaid funeral sales
    • Consumer protection, FTC funeral rules, and fair labor standards requirements
  • Total for Renewal: At renewal, a licensee must certify they have completed at least 8 hours of CE over the two-year cycle, with at least 4 hours in the specific subjects listed above.

Additional Information:

  • Certification: Licensees will certify CE completion as part of the renewal application.
  • Audits: All licensees are subject to audit and must retain CE documentation for 4 years after the date of renewal.
  • Eligible Credits: Acceptable CE courses include those:
    • Approved by the Academy of Professional Funeral Service Practice
    • Offered by an ABFSE-accredited program
    • Sponsored by a hospital, licensed healthcare institution, or government agency
